Sinusitis/Rhinosinusitis Q & A

Allergist Dublin

What is sinusitis/rhinosinusitis?

Sinusitis is a chronic sinus infection, which is usually caused by an untreated virus. Sinusitis is an inflammation or swelling, of the tissue lining the sinuses. Normally, sinuses are filled with air, but when sinuses become blocked and filled with fluid, germs such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi, can grow and cause an infection. Rhinosinusitis is a sinus infection which lasts more than 4 weeks. Sinusitis is common in both adults and children. Sinusitis can also be caused by deformities in the nasal or sinus cavities. Symptoms include:

  • Facial pain
  • Tenderness and swelling around the eyes, cheeks, nose and forehead
  • Sinus pressure or congestion
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose
  • Sinus headaches
  • Green or yellow mucus
  • Teeth pain
  • Fatigue
  • Sore throat from nasal discharge
  • Bad breath

How can these conditions be treated?

A variety of medical and surgical methods can be used to treat sinusitis. Medical options include orally administered antibiotics or steroids, topical antibiotics or steroids in either gel or nebulized forms, nasal sprays or sinus irrigation. Most doctors will begin treatment conservatively, especially when treating children, by prescribing medicines to reduce inflammation or antibiotics to fight infection. If medication does not work, surgical procedures can also be employed to treat chronic sinusitis. An endoscopy can help the doctor to determine the cause of the inflammation. Sinusplasty or balloon sinusplasty are used to remove blockages or widen the sinus passages increasing airflow and reducing the discomfort of congestion.

What can I do to manage my chronic sinusitis?

If you, or your child, suffer from chronic sinusitis, there are steps you can take to manage the symptoms. First, do not smoke and/or avoid situations where the people around you will be smoking, this is particulary important for younger children. You can also use a neti pot or squeeze bottle to practice nasal irrigation once or twice a day. This process pushing a saline solution into one nostril and lets it drip out the other to reduce any swelling, thin any mucus, and wash out germs, allergens, and other inflammatory cells.
