COPD is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, one which makes it increasingly difficult to breathe. COPD develops slowly over time, with symptoms worsening over time and eventually limiting a person’s ability to do even basic activities like walking. Most of the time COPD is diagnosed in middle-aged or older adults. With COPD less air flows in and out of the lungs. This can be caused by a number of conditions including a loss of elasticity in the airways and air sacs of the lungs, the walls between the air sacs are destroyed or thicken due to inflammation, or the airways become clogged with thick mucus. In the United States, emphysema and chronic bronchitis are included under the term COPD.
The symptoms of asthma and COPD are similar, however, asthma does not develop and become progressively more serious over time. Also, while the changes that occur in the body which cause the symptoms of both asthma and COPD are similar, people dealing with asthma symptoms find that they typically occur because of environmental factors which cause a reaction in the lungs. The symptoms of COPD are usually caused by damaging behaviors of the individual, such as smoking. Asthma is typically diagnosed early in life, usually by the age of five, while COPD is not usually diagnosed until middle age or later.
There is no cure for COPD or asthma, so management is essential. With early diagnoses and treatment, asthma can be effectively controlled in both adult and pediatric patients. COPD, on the other hand, is progressive, so treatment will only slow the development of the disease. In both cases, avoiding smoking and allergens will help. Using prescribed medications and adhering to prescribed behaviors will also help with both conditions.
