Hives/Urticaria Q & A

What causes hives/urticaria?

Urticaria is the Latin word for hives, the itchy, raised red bumps which can appear anywhere on the skin and are frequently associated with allergic and autoimmune reactions. Hives are typically triggered by exposure to triggers including:

  • Some foods

  • Medications

  • Insect stings or bites

  • Physical stimuli like pressure

  • Cold or heat

  • Latex

  • Bacterial and viral infections

  • Pet Dander

  • Pollen

What treatment is available?

As with most allergic reactions the best course of management is avoidance. Expert advice, testing, and treatment may be available depending on the severity of the symptoms. Antihistamines are frequently prescribed to treat the symptoms. Cold compresses or topical solutions can be used to reduce the itchiness. Severe outbreaks or chronic reappearance of the hives is sometimes treated with prednisone, a corticosteroid medication, which could alleviate the severity of the symptoms. If a patient is at risk of restricted breathing due to swelling of the tongue, throat or lips, a doctor may prescribe an epinephrine pen in case of an emergency as these symptoms are early indicators of anaphylaxis.

How long will an outbreak last?

There are two forms of hives, acute and chronic, or short term and long term. Symptoms can last anywhere from a few minutes to weeks or months. Hives can appear anywhere on the body, they can come and go over a period of time. Hives are not usually dangerous, however, any swelling of the throat or restricted breathing does require immediate attention and emergency care.
