What are common allergies?
Allergic reactions to food occur when a sensitive person eats, inhales or comes into contact, with even small amounts of certain foods which contain allergen proteins. They can affect both children and adults. Food allergy diagnoses are becoming more common. Peanut and tree nut allergies are becoming the most frequently occurring allergies. The most common allergies in children include; cow’s milk, hen’s eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soybeans, and wheat. Adults tend to be allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, seafood, fruits, and vegetables. Most allergic reactions begin within two hours of coming into contact or eating the allergy-causing food.
What symptoms are common to food allergies?
The body’s immune system fights off infection to maintain health. An allergic reaction occurs when the immune system perceives an allergen as a threat and tries to fight it off, causing what is referred to as an allergic reaction. This causes the body to present symptoms allowing a doctor to diagnose an allergy. Most of the time, symptoms present just after the food product is consumed. Typical symptoms can include skin rashes including hives and red itchy patches, swollen lips or eyelids, constricted throats, difficult breathing or wheezing, coughing, vomiting or diarrhea.
What can be done to treat food allergies?
The most effective treatment for food allergies is to avoid the foods that contain the allergens, this will be true for both adults and children. Ingredient labels require that food manufacturers include comprehensive lists of their product ingredients, including common allergens in clear simple language. Many manufacturers also include warning statements if common food allergens are even processed in the same facility.
Food allergies range from mild to severe and life-threatening, and there is no way to tell if the reaction will be the same the next time it occurs. Also, allergic reactions may change over time, getting worse or even disappearing at different stages in life. Mild symptoms can be treated with an antihistamine, but once an allergy is diagnosed, an epinephrine auto-injector, or Epi-pen, in case of severe anaphylaxis is typically prescribed.
