Eczema/Atopic Dermatitis Q & A

What is the difference between Eczema and Atopic Dermatitis?

Eczema is a generic term for any type of itchy, rash skin disorder or dermatitis. Eczema is characterized by itching and redness. Some forms will cause peeling, blistering or weeping of the skin. Eczema is typically found on the insides of elbows and knees or on the face, but it can occur anywhere on the body. Atopic dermatitis is the most severe and longest lasting form of eczema. Atopic dermatitis is a categorization of diseases which are related to allergic reactions, like asthma or hay fever. It is not contagious and is most likely a genetic condition.

What causes these conditions?

The cause of atopic dermatitis is not known, but research indicates that the symptoms are caused by an over reaction of inflammatory cells in the skin as a response to exposure to an allergen. The skin condition is not contagious. It is more common in those who have family histories of allergies.

Can I do anything to limit or reduce outbreaks?

Good hygiene and skin care regimes can help to manage outbreaks. Use caution regarding sun exposure, sunlight can help, but take measures to avoid sunburn. Keep your skin hydrated by not taking overly hot showers or baths and applying a moisturizer directly afterwards. Avoid soaps, perfumes or fabrics which could irritate your skin. If you know you tend to have outbreaks due to certain allergens like animal dander or certain foods, do your best to avoid situations where you could be exposed. Reducing stress can also help your skin. You can also take steps to manage itching by trying a coal tar preparation, using protective dressings and keeping your fingernails trimmed and smooth.
