Pediatric Allergies and Asthma

Asthma and allergies, despite being difficult to diagnose are common childhood conditions. Dr. Samra at Tri Valley Allergy offers diagnostics and treatments for children from throughout the San Francisco bay area with offices in Livermore, Dublin, and Pleasanton, California. Asthma is a chronic lung disease where the airways, or bronchi, of the lungs, are swollen and inflamed, making it difficult to move air in and out of the lungs. It affects around 7 million American children.

Children who cough and sneeze a lot without presenting other symptoms of a cold or those who have stomachaches, cramping or nausea after eating certain foods may have allergies. Difficulty breathing or wheezing could indicate asthma. Early diagnoses of asthma and identification of specific allergies lead to earlier treatment and management which can improve the child’s quality of life. Some of the common allergy symptoms in children include skin rashes or hives, sneezing, coughing, runny nose, itchy eyes, difficulty in breathing, and stomach upsets.

Treatment of an allergy begins by determining the trigger that is causing the allergic reaction. In some cases, the cause can be fairly obvious, but sometimes, allergy testing is needed. There are different methods of performing allergy testing based on the needs and symptoms of the child. Once the trigger has been identified, oral medications, topical medications or allergy shots may be used to relieve symptoms or reduce the reaction. Each treatment will be carefully customized to the needs of the child. Patients with very severe reactions may need to carry a special self-injecting device to prevent anaphylactic shock.
